RogerATC replaces the simulator's built-in air traffic control with a controller you work by voice, in English or Spanish, on push-to-talk. It reads your own aerodrome data: the stand you are on, the taxiway you are using, the surface wind, the transponder code it assigned you and every clearance it has already issued. Each transmission is rendered from phraseology a person wrote — the language model reads what you said, and never writes what the controller says.

Standard phraseology, spoken and understood

Key the transmitter, pass your message as you would on a live frequency, and release. Transmit the way a pilot transmits — position, condition and request in a single call — and the request is what gets answered.

  • Corrects a position report the aerodrome data proves wrong, with NEGATIVE and the correct position
  • Requests your position when you have not passed it, then issues what you asked for
  • Stays silent on a correct readback, as a controller does
  • Keying the transmitter cuts the controller off — the frequency is simplex
  • Identifies Tower from Ground by the frequency you have tuned, and each answers for its own position

What it does

Everything a controller does, and one thing none of them can

Clearance to parking, in either language, on your own scenery — plus somebody in the right seat you can ask anything.

Taxi routes over your real airport

Routed across the actual taxiway network in your X-Plane installation, including your add-on scenery. If a taxiway is not in your airport, it will never be in your clearance.

Phraseology a person wrote

The AI reads what you said. It never writes what the controller says. Every transmission comes from a template with a source cited on it — which is the difference between a training tool and a toy.

Spanish that is not translated English

Written from Spanish-language sources, with regional variants. An Argentine controller says “ruede a punto de espera”, not the longer Americas form — and now so does yours.

It remembers, per station

It greets you once, not every time you key the microphone. It leaves out the QNH it already gave you. Tell Ground where you are and Tower still asks — because they are different people.

The frequency is alive

The tower sequences you in the circuit before you ask. Other aircraft are heard working the same frequency, in their own voices — audible, and never something you are told to follow.

Transponder, assigned and watched

A code with your clearance, and then somebody actually looking at it. Wrong four digits, transponder still in standby on the runway, IDENT pressed — all of it noticed and answered.

Your audio, your key, your machine

Your voice goes to the AI provider you chose, or nowhere at all. It never passes through us — there is no server of ours in the path, and there is no code path that could put one there.

Runs beside the simulator, not inside it

The heavy work happens in a separate process. If the AI pipeline ever falls over, your flight does not — and the frame-time budget it is allowed inside X-Plane is a third of a millisecond.

Real weather, or the simulator's

The ATIS speaks the weather you are actually flying in. Prefer the real report? It reads the METAR your simulator downloaded, or fetches and caches one for the fields ahead of you.

The one rule

The AI never writes a clearance

This is the single most important decision in the product, and it is the reason you can trust what you hear. A language model left to improvise will invent a taxiway, a runway, or an altitude — confidently, and in perfect radio English. So it is not allowed to write anything at all.

The same clearance, at the same airport, in the two languages RogerATC speaks. Neither was translated from the other, and the Argentine wording was taken from a real communication rather than from a dictionary.

San Fernando has one runway and, in the stock scenery, not one named taxiway — so the clearance names neither. It says what the data supports, and stops.

“Ruede a punto de espera”, not the longer “autorizado para rodar hasta posición de espera” — the short form is what the controller actually says, and it is the first thing a local would notice.

Instructor Eight knots from the left, gusting nine, for a crosswind component of eight knots on runway zero five. The demonstrated crosswind for the type is fifteen. The wind is steady, so it is a routine one.

Instructor At ninety-two knots over the ground, seven hundred and fifty feet above the surface. It varies with ground speed alone, so it changes through the turn as you go from downwind to upwind.

Instructor El Palomar, Sierra Alfa Delta Papa, is fifty-nine feet, three point seven miles to the north-east. Tower is on one one eight decimal one. That is from your own aerodrome data.

Every figure in those answers was computed from the simulator's own state or read from your aerodrome data. Where no calculation exists, the instructor says so rather than producing a plausible number.

On the intercom

A type-rated instructor in the right seat

A second push-to-talk, keyed to the cabin intercom rather than the radio. Question it on the aircraft you are operating, the observed weather, the airspace ahead, the aerodrome you are routing to, or the clearance you have just been issued. It answers from the simulator's own state and from deterministic calculation.

  • Every figure is computed from your aircraft and the prevailing conditions, never recalled
  • Monitors the instruments and calls deviations: flap limiting speed, high rate of descent at low level, gear up on final
  • Conducts scored exercises — steep turns, slow flight, holding — and debriefs them against the tolerances
  • Explains manoeuvres from authored, cited material: pivotal altitude, course reversals, DME arcs, holding entries, engine failure procedure
  • Answers unable to determine when that is the truth, rather than offering a plausible figure
A frequency with other people on it

You are not the only aircraft at the field

A real frequency is never silent. Other aircraft call for start-up, read back a taxi instruction, report downwind and are cleared to land, and the ramp vehicle asks to cross a taxiway — all of it while you wait your turn. RogerATC puts that traffic on your frequency, so learning to fit into a conversation is part of the exercise rather than something you meet for the first time on a real radio.

  • Six other aircraft, each with a registration in the local style and a voice of its own, so the same aeroplane always sounds the same
  • Start-up, taxi, downwind, final and a ground vehicle crossing — spaced at random, between roughly forty-five seconds and five minutes apart depending on how busy you set the field
  • They taxi via taxiways your own scenery actually has, and are cleared for the runway in use — nothing is named that does not exist at your aerodrome
  • They never talk over you: keying your transmitter, or being answered, pushes the next exchange back
  • Audible and never actionable — you are never told to give way to an aircraft you cannot see, because it is on the radio and not on the field

Where the data comes from

Nothing is invented and nothing is bundled. The plugin reads your own X-Plane installation and, where you allow it, a small number of declared services. The EFB resolves every capability through a provider registry, so the source of any figure can always be named.

RogerATC · the plugin

Speech recognition, language and speech synthesis run through whichever provider you configure. Weather is read from the simulator first and fetched only when it has none. Winds aloft and how busy the real sky is around you are optional, each behind your own key. Aerodromes, runways, taxiways, frequencies, procedures and airspace come from your own installation and are never redistributed.

Eighteen declared external providers across weather, NOTAM, aerodrome data, airspace, terrain, imagery and traffic, resolved one per capability so two sources never disagree unattributed. Argentine and South American sources are ordered first, with global services as the fallback, and every cached value records which provider produced it.

Keys are held in the operating system keychain on your own machine and travel only to the provider you chose. They are never proxied, stored or transmitted through us. Selecting a local model removes the network from the loop entirely.

We sell the software, not the tokens. You connect your own AI provider key and pay that provider directly for what you use — or run the whole thing locally on Apple Silicon and pay nothing per hour at all. Whatever happens to us, the copy on your machine keeps working.

A licence you buy once. It does not expire, it does not phone home to stay alive, and if you never give us another cent it carries on doing exactly what it did the day you bought it.

Bring a key from the AI provider you already use and pay them directly — no markup, because we never touch the transaction. Or pick a local model and take the internet out of the loop entirely.

A subscription is a thing that can be taken away

Any competitor billing monthly must carry your inference cost, which means routing your voice through their infrastructure. That is the trade this product declines, and it is why there is no subscription and why your audio never passes through us.

How it will install

There is nothing to download yet. RogerATC is being flown and refined, and it will be released when it is correct rather than on a date. What follows is what installation will involve.

One installer

It writes into your X-Plane plugins folder and nowhere else. Deleting that one folder removes it completely.

Your AI key, or none

Paste a provider key into a window the plugin itself draws — it goes into your system keychain. Or choose a local model and skip this entirely.

Bind push-to-talk

Two keys or two buttons on your yoke: one for the radio, one for the intercom. Set them in X-Plane's own keyboard settings.

Then just talk

No account to fly, no launcher in the background, no navigation data downloaded. It reads the airports you already have.

Questions

The things people ask first

Do I need to pay for AI on top of the licence?
You connect your own key from an AI provider and pay them directly for what you use — for most people that is a few dollars a month. Or you run a local model on Apple Silicon and pay nothing at all. We never resell inference, so there is no markup and no subscription.
Does my voice go through your servers?
No, and it cannot. Your audio goes from your machine to the provider you chose, or stays on your machine in local mode. There is no server of ours anywhere in that path, and the rule is enforced by a check that runs on every build.
Will it slow down my simulator?
The heavy work runs in a separate process next to X-Plane, not inside it. The part that does run inside has a budget of a third of a millisecond per frame, and it steps back automatically if it ever exceeds it.
Does it work with my add-on scenery?
Yes — that is rather the point. It reads the airports in your installation and applies the same precedence X-Plane does, so if your scenery redefines an airport, your clearances follow your scenery.
Is the Spanish just the English translated?
No. It is written from Spanish-language sources with regional variants, and it is checked against real communications. A clearance that reads like a translation is a bug in this product, not a shortcut.
Can it replace a real instructor?
No, and it says so everywhere it can. It is for simulation and communication practice. It is not an approved training device and it does not replace certified flight instruction.
Which simulators does it support?
X-Plane 12.4 and later, on macOS first. About 85% of the code has nothing to do with any particular simulator, which is what makes other platforms a port rather than a rewrite.
When does it ship?
When it is right. It is being flown daily and the remaining work is tuning rather than building. The date, the price and the download will be announced on this page.
